High blood pressure is the biggest risk factor for heart problems and is one of the top five risk factors for all premature death and disability in England.
Undiagnosed high blood pressure
High blood pressure often has no symptoms. You can’t see it, smell it, taste it, touch it or feel it. Which understandably makes it hard to spot it when you have it. That is why there is an estimated 5.5 million people across the country with high blood pressure, also known as hypertension.
Heart problems, which you might also hear being called Cardiovascular Disease or CVD, affect 7 million people right now and cause disability for many. High blood pressure is one of the factors that cause heart problems and because it is hard to know if your pressure is high, it can be hard to know that you need to act.
The NHS has a plan to try and help at least 4.4 million of those people who don’t realise that they have high blood pressure find out and do something about it. We are commissioned to help with this aim and as an NHS service our NHS blood pressure clinic is free for all over 40s.
Here is what is involved.
Painfree pressure checks
A simple, painfree and reliable check of your blood pressure is all it takes to find out more. It takes about 10 minutes. Our highly trained and experienced clinicians will measure your blood pressure using a sensitive machine in our private consultation room. The test doesn’t require us to ‘take’ any blood or undressing. It involves wrapping a cuff around your upper arm and letting the machine do its work. A cuff is a like a strip of material with velcro to keep it close to your arm.
The important part of the check is interpreting the results. Our clinicians can advise you about how to manage your health to make sure your blood pressure does not become high and cause you problems. In most cases we’ll provide advice about the kind of every day behaviours that affect blood pressure and how you can manage those.
If the first reading is higher than expected we can provide an additional check to help get a fuller picture, alongside lifestyle advice and referral to other healthcare professionals if necessary.
